New Research Study: Exploring the Power of Breathwork to Support Veterans with PTS

Heroic Hearts Project is proud to partner with Vivian Rosenthal of Frequency Breathwork and Dr. Adam Hanley of Florida State University on a new research study exploring the potential of cyclical breathwork to improve the well-being of veterans experiencing post-traumatic stress (PTS). Jordan Sloshower, MD, of Yale University, is the lead psychiatrist on the study

About the Study

This pilot study, titled “Breathwork Intervention for Veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS),” is a single-site, randomized, waitlist-controlled trial. The research will investigate how cyclical breathwork (CB) impacts PTS symptoms and overall wellness in veterans.

Sessions will take place at Diamond Rose Sanctuary, a serene retreat setting in Branford, Connecticut—just two hours from NYC or Boston.

The study includes:

  • A 2-hour in-person breathwork session led by certified guide Vivian Rosenthal, founder of Frequency Breathwork
  • Optional access to a cold plunge, hot tub, and sauna
  • A home-cooked, nourishing lunch
  • Two virtual follow-up sessions (1 hour each) within two weeks of the in-person experience

Summer Dates (Cohort 01)

  • Saturday 7/19/2025
  • Back-up Date (in case of weather): Sunday 7/20/2025

Fall Dates (Cohort 02)

  • Saturday 9/27/2025
  • Back-up Date (in case of weather): Sunday 9/28/2025

Why Breathwork?

Breathwork is increasingly recognized as a powerful, accessible tool for nervous system regulation, trauma healing, and emotional processing. This study seeks to bring scientific rigor to the anecdotal reports of relief many veterans have found through these practices.

Who Can Participate?

This study is open to veterans living within driving distance of Branford, CT, who are experiencing symptoms related to PTS. Participants will receive support throughout the process and have the opportunity to contribute to much-needed research on alternative mental health modalities for the veteran community.
